I dunno, something about the alternative matchup seemed more symmetric, at least number wise. But since Edo-Madara is the real one, it’s more poetic that he fight the Kages, I guess.
I actually think Naruto vs. Tobi & the 6 Paths is a side-match. Naruto’s already faced and beat the 6 Paths of Pain so I’m not sure what’s novel or more challenging about this fight (Tobi-Madara is almost as weak physically as Nagato was as 6 Path puppeteer, excepting Space-Time jutsu). The main fight has to be Naruto vs. Sasuke, which will either occur after Naruto beats Tobi or maybe if Sasuke interrupts that fight. I can see the Kages occupying Edo-Madara long enough for Itachi to find Kabuto and cancel the Edo Tensei.
One possible endgame I could imagine is that the Alliance beats Madara et al., but Sasuke is still bent on revenge against the Leaf & Shinobi world, and so Naruto has to do the whole chosen one thing and take the brunt of Sasuke’s hatred.
