This is very similar to the Insanity Fitness warm ups (just with fewer high impact exercises and shorter intervals).
This is a great workout to do when you first wake up in the morning or right before you go to bed (:
According to Steve Cabral (the guy in the video) this is based on some Japanese research and he uses the word “tabata” so I presume this is a typical use of Tabata training, a form of high intensity interval training. I’m going to add this to my HealthMonth rules for December; I’m thinking I’d do it on non-yoga days. Maybe work in a few different tabatas, although I like this one; it’s good for my weak hip flexors. I went through it once. I did pretty well, if I do say so myself. It’s an ass-kicker, but I recovered to a comfortable feeling pretty quickly.
It’s simple to get the hang of. There’s a slick-looking but annoying-sounding online Tabata timer and of course there’s an iPhone app which is more configurable and so I presume less annoying to listen to. You only have to remember four exercises and what order you want to do them in. You just start and stop when the timer tells you to. I’d think there’s rationale behind what order you do them in, but it probably doesn’t matter too much. In my opinion, the four exercises in this workout are ordered from most to least difficult.
Next time I’ll try it with the heart rate monitor. I have no clue what kind of calorie burn you’d get out of this.
Give it a try. Whaddya think?
I did this yesterday and my lungs were on fire, my legs felt like jelly and are still sore today. It felt good. I used the Tabata Timer app (which is free right now) to the time the cycles. 20 seconds is longer than you think. It seems like a good way to add cardio to weight-lifting program.
